Discover your future in medicine!
Mentorship in Medicine is an innovative mentorship program connecting local youth with real-world medical learning experiences — long before university or medical school.
Delivered by BGC Greater Halifax in partnership with Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine, this program gives highschool aged youth the chance to explore careers in surgery and healthcare through hands-on skills, mentorship, and guided learning.
Two Learning Streams
We currently offer two unique streams, to provide opportunity for continued learning and mentorship.
Exploring the Field of Surgery
An introductory stream designed for youth beginning to explore health careers.
Participants in this stream:
- Learn about surgical careers and clinical teamwork
- Explore human anatomy and medical science
- Meet medical students and healthcare professionals
- Develop confidence in STEM and health learning environments
Perfect for youth curious about medicine but unsure where to start.
Future Heart Surgeons
An advanced stream focused on cardiovascular medicine and surgical skills.
Participants in this stream:
- Practice suturing and procedural techniques
- Work with cardiac and vascular simulation models
- Solve real-world medical scenarios
- Strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving skills
This stream allows participants to experience training methods similar to those used in medical education.
